The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will not rush to call off its two month-long strike despite receiving the Federal Government’s proposal late Monday.
The FG, in a meeting with members of the union in Abuja, agreed to release N20bn out of N105bn earned allowance to offset outstanding arrears of 2009/2012 audit verified earnings in the university system.
It also said the payment of service shortfall in the system amounting to N15.3bn had been released by the Ministry of Finance and the Office of Accountant General.
The government wishes for the strike to be called off by the weekend so that lecturers can return to lecture halls latest next week.
ASUU’s leadership, however, says the strike will not be called off until other members agree to FG’s proposal.
The union’s president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said the proposal would be properly reviewed before a conclusion is reached.
“We have had an extensive session looking at all the issues and just like the minister said, there are issues that will require further consultations at the level of our union before we can make any pronouncement on our stand,” Ogunyemi said.
“The Federal Government has promised to reach us as soon as possible with a proposal on those areas where further consultation is needed. The strike continues.
“We are still going for consultation. What we discussed is not about us but our people. I am not sure that there is an end in sight.”
Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige said, among other discussions, that the agreement between the last administration and ASUU to pay revitalisation fee of N220bn annually for six years starting from 2009 “has not been fulfilled.”
“Government being continuous, this government has agreed to source for funding. We have offered ASUU some token to show good faith,”
